WHERE DOES THE NAME ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE COME FROM?
F.M.Alexander was born in 1869 in Tasmania and embarked on a career as an actor giving solo recitations of Shakespeare.
Within a few years he developed voice problems leading to hoarseness and occasionally complete loss of voice, threatening his career.
Finding doctors unable to offer long-term help, Alexander reasoned that his mis-use of himself whilst speaking was the cause of the problem, and set about finding a solution.
After years of acute observation and patient experiment, he discovered principles that, in application, removed not only his voice problem but improved his entire neuromuscular system.
Alexander’s friends and associates noted the remarkable change in him and asked if he would be wiling to teach them what he had learned. Thus began a career, which took him to the USA and England, where he eventually settled.
In the UK there are over 900 teachers, who are registered members of STAT, plus over 2,000 overseas affiliated society teachers.
